Deprecation of Ordinals (Inscriptions) support in Leather

Leather is ending support for Ordinals, including Bitcoin inscriptions and BRC-20 tokens, on May 18, 2026. Transfer inscriptions to a compatible wallet before this date to avoid accidental loss through regular BTC transactions.

Apr 22, 2026

Leather will discontinue support for Ordinals, including Bitcoin inscriptions and BRC-20 tokens, on May 18, 2026. After this date, inscriptions will no longer be displayed or protected within Leather.

Unlike Stamps or SRC-20 tokens, inscriptions carry real risk of accidental loss because they are tied to specific UTXOs. Without wallet-level protection, regular BTC transactions may unintentionally transfer or destroy an inscription. You are strongly advised to transfer your inscriptions or migrate to an Ordinals-compatible wallet before May 18 to avoid accidental loss.

What is Changing

After May 18, 2026:

  • Inscriptions and BRC-20 tokens will no longer be displayed in Leather.
  • Leather will no longer identify or protect inscription-related UTXOs.
  • Bitcoin transactions may spend inscription-containing UTXOs without warning beyond basic safeguards.

Inscriptions remain on the Bitcoin blockchain and are not deleted. BRC-20 tokens — which are inscribed using the Ordinals protocol — are unaffected on-chain; only Leather's wallet-level support is ending.

Important Risk to Understand

Inscriptions are tied to specific UTXOs — an inscribed sat is typically accompanied by padding sats to keep the output above the Bitcoin dust limit. Without wallet-level protection:

  • Sending Bitcoin may unintentionally transfer or destroy inscriptions.
  • Leather will treat all UTXOs as standard Bitcoin.

After the deprecation date, users are responsible for managing inscription safety.

Limited Safeguards After Deprecation

Leather will show a generic warning whenever the wallet tries to spend BTC from the Taproot address, because this address can contain bitcoin with inscriptions or runes. These safeguards:

  • Are not guarantees.
  • Do not replace full Ordinals support.
  • Should not be relied on for asset safety.

What You Should Do Before May 18

If you want to retain your inscriptions, you have three options.

Option 1: Transfer inscriptions (recommended)

While Leather still supports inscriptions:

  1. Go to the Collectibles tab.
  2. Locate the inscription you want to transfer.
  3. Hover over it and select Send.
  4. Enter a receiving address from a compatible wallet.
  5. Confirm the transaction.

Notes:

  • Ensure the destination wallet supports Ordinals.
  • Keep enough BTC in your wallet to cover fees.
  • Double-check the receiving address before sending.

Option 2: Access your wallet in another wallet

You can restore your Leather wallet in another wallet that supports Ordinals. This method continues to work after May 18.

If you use Account 1 in Leather:

  • Restore your Secret Key in Xverse.
  • Use the native SegWit address as the payment address if prompted.

If you use Account 2 or higher:

  • Xverse doesn't support these derivation paths.
  • Use UniSat instead. See this guide to access any derivation path, and this guide to determine the exact derivation path. Or email support@leather.io for help.

Option 3: Leave L1 collectables and migrate L2 assets

If you hold many inscriptions and don't want to pay fees to transfer each one individually:

  1. Leave inscriptions in the original wallet address.
  2. Create a new Leather wallet (new Secret Key or Ledger device).
  3. Transfer your BTC, STX, and other assets to the new wallet.
  4. Restore the original wallet in an Ordinals-compatible wallet when needed.

This avoids high fees and saves time compared to transferring each inscription.

Important Notes

  • You need BTC in your wallet to pay transaction fees.
  • Some wallets may not support all derivation paths used by Leather.
  • Not all wallets provide the same level of Ordinals support.
  • Test with a small transfer if you're unsure.

Background

Supporting Ordinals requires specialized indexing infrastructure, ongoing third-party API dependencies, and additional transaction logic and protections. Leather is prioritizing core Bitcoin functionality, Stacks ecosystem support, and features such as multi-wallet support and improved transaction flows.
